Many single Christian women would love to be married. Sometimes marriage is an idol. For them, heaven is being with a man who will love them unconditionally. As they approach their 40th birthday the possibility of marriage seems increasingly remote. Social convention, parental expectations and individual aspirations mean that being single just feels awkward and embarassing. It ought not to feel like that in church. But it does. Sustained reflection on their situation in life can lead to profound disappointment. The opportunities for sin to seize upon this disappointment and for it to become an occasion for resentment and bitterness are very real. Most people know at least one person who did this for whom it all worked out brilliantly.

I got married to one myself. Daniel and I have been married for 13 years and have two girls. He was very happy to have our children baptised and for faith to be part of their life. Lots of people come to faith at later stages of life and others may lose it. Happily for us, things have grown together and Daniel was confirmed last year. He would now quite happily call himself a Christian and a believer.

Some people have told me that being unequally yoked is talking exclusively about marriage. Others have said that it applies also to business partnerships and other situations. Could you please expand on this? What does it mean to be unequally yoked and what type of a guideline should I have if it is okay for me to have a business partnership with a non-believer?
Well, this is a very important question. A yoke was something that was put over two animals in a common enterprise.

Hey, girls! In fact, we are revisiting some of our most read posts this month as part of our attempt to give you some great advice on the subject of romance. Lately there has been some discussion on this blog about whether or not it is okay for Christians to date non-Christians. We encountered this same conversation over and over as we did research for Lies Young Women Believe. In fact, this is one of the 25 lies addressed directly in the book.
Some of you have made similar comments here on the blog. But I know that you might not be willing to simply take my word on this one. I understand the temptation to believe that dating non-Christians is okay. In fact, I get why so many young women have been deceived into thinking that it is a potentially wonderful missions opportunity.
I actually fell for this one myself as a high school and college-aged woman. Let me introduce you to Brice. He just happens to be a handsome, funny college student who is currently serving as the youth ministry intern at my church. I asked him to read the parts of this blog where young women were talking about dating non-Christians.
‘I went to buy a gelato … and I got the gospel’
Tinder is an app that uses your GPS location to find potential romantic matches near your location. It was launched in , and in had 9 million monthly users, going upwards. The median age is 26 years old. It did initially have that reputation, but that stigma is reducing and the app has evolved to become much more of a general dating app, branching out and providing more services. So a few months ago, I decided to give it a go. Curiosity sparked and I ended up engaging in conversations with quite a few unbelievers.
He suggests that the bottom line for a Christian is: will you only marry a believer? Undoubtedly, out of 25 million active Tinder users, some of them will be Christian. I actually met two lovely Christian guys on there. But, it was a very small percentage of the guys that I interacted with. Some of the men I spoke to made me feel like a commodity.

I really like him. Please help. Navigating romance and relationships can be a really hard and sometimes tricky thing. As Christian women, how do we make decisions that ultimately place God at the center of our romantic pursuits? How do we date while keeping the truths of Scripture at the front of our priority list?
I say that the biblical issue here is not how you meet, but whom you marry. A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives, but if her husband dies she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. So a Christian is not free to marry outside the Lord. Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. So biblically the bottom line for the follower of Christ is: Will you marry only a believer.
And what saddens me, Tony, is how many believers get so entangled emotionally with unbelievers that they either throw away their convictions or they stand on their head to see the other person as a believer when he is not. So let me make it a little more precise. A mature believer will want his or her spouse not just to profess some kind of creed or be willing to go to church. What they will want is not just a marriage that is minimally Christian, but a Christian marriage.
And a Christian marriage is described in Ephesians five like this. Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the Church. And husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave himself for her.
Can I Date an Unbeliever?
And I’d like to ask that you turn in your Bibles to the text that Darcy just read as we continue our study in 1 Corinthians. We’ve come now to this passage, 1 Corinthians Now, this week I was talking to someone about the Word of God, and I was thinking about the marvels of the Word of God, the written Word of God, and how incredible it is. And one of the great gifts of grace to me in my life has been that this is my portion, that I get to study God’s Word continually, I get to drink it in, I get to marvel at it, and to teach it, and this is an incredible grace to me.
But as I was talking to this individual, I was thinking about some conflicting images of the Word of God, and one of them comes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount where he says, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Pastor MacArthur may disagree doctrinally with Charismatics on some gift issues, but he has not, to date, disassociated himself with all those.

Your soul is stuffed with small things, and there is no room for the great. And people who would be happy in heaven if Christ were not there, will not be there. The gospel is not a way to get people to heaven; it is a way to get people to God. It’s a way of overcoming every obstacle to everlasting joy in God.
If we don’t want God above all things, we have not been converted by the gospel. It is the glory of God not honored. The holiness of God not reverenced. The greatness of God not admired.
Often but not always , those who are pondering this question readily acknowledge that the Bible says a Christian cannot marry a non-Christian. Nevertheless, they believe they can move down this path because 1 the Bible does not forbid dating an unbeliever; or 2 their romantic relationship can serve as a means of evangelism to the unbelieving boyfriend or girlfriend; or 3 their situation is unique; 4 a combination of some or all of the above.
Is Dating in the Bible? That last statement might cause a few biblically-minded Christians to stumble. But we need to be precise at this point so that we do not attempt to protect a clear commandment you cannot marry an unbeliever; see 1 Cor with an extra-biblical rule you cannot date an unbeliever.
So if you’ve been willingly dating an unbelieving man and moving more on what that little phrase means, listen to John Piper on the subject).
